Religious Studies

Religious Studies

Our Vision

The Religious Studies department curriculum and pedagogical approach allows for each student to see the world through the many disciplinary lenses of Religious Studies. These include anthropology, philosophy, ethics, sociology, and theology. Religious Studies students study religious thought primarily as a chronology of thought in the early years which allows them to develop their own world views on issues such as life after death, ethical dilemmas, and rites of passage. Through this study they draw comparisons between world views and ultimately develop a deep tolerance and respect for views different to their own. Our subject curriculum fosters a love for critical thinking, debate and self-discovery which helps shape our students into tolerant, reflective and deep-thinking young people ready to be emersed in the diverse nature of the wider world.

GCSE Course Information

The course is divided into two components. In component one students will study the belief, teachings and practices of Judaism and Christianity. Whilst drawing upon knowledge of other religious thought to make comparisons on their approach to matters such as divine characteristics and worship.

In component two students debate ethical issues such as crime and punishment, human rights, peace and conflict and matters of life such as euthanasia and abortion. Students draw on their knowledge and understanding of KS3 Religious Studies to consider the many different viewpoints of religious and non-religious thought on these issues which helps them to develop their own personal worldviews. Students are then assessed on these two components via Paper 1 and Paper 2 of the GCSE.
